“It is extremely rare to find a work of this scope that is also so poetic, honest, and uncompromising. It truly feels like discovering a hidden gem.”
Canadian pianist Élisabeth Pion has become one of the most prominent interpreters of Lūcija Garūta’s music on the international stage. Her path toward this repertoire began with a deep interest in discovering lesser-known works, which eventually led her to Garūta’s Piano Concerto—an emotionally rich and musically powerful piece that Pion describes as reminiscent of a cinematic masterpiece.

In 2023, she performed the concerto in a concert series in Montreal with the Orchestre Métropolitain under the baton of Kensho Watanabe. This program continued in the United States, where she gave the historic U.S. premiere of Garūta’s Piano Concerto with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, further expanding the global recognition of Garūta’s music.

In preparation for these performances, Élisabeth traveled to Riga to explore Garūta’s legacy firsthand. She visited the composer’s former apartment in Bergs Bazaar, played Garūta’s original grand piano, and met with those who have helped preserve her memory. The visit was captured in a short documentary film. A follow-up video shows Élisabeth preparing for the Canadian concerts, continuing her interpretative journey through Garūta’s work.

In addition to the Piano Concerto, Pion has included other Garūta compositions in her repertoire, such as “Meditation,” which reveals the composer’s spiritual and emotional depth. With her thoughtful and sensitive approach, Pion brings Garūta’s music to life for a wider international audience.

This film follows pianist Élisabeth Pion’s visit to Riga, where she explores the life and work of composer Lūcija Garūta. Élisabeth visits Garūta’s apartment, offering insights into the composer’s environment and her creative process.
