Māris Skuja

Māris Skuja is a Latvian pianist renowned for his extensive work as a répétiteur. For sixteen years, he served as the principal répétiteur at the Latvian National Opera. Since 1991, Skuja has been based in Austria, working with the Graz Opera House as a répétiteur and head of the opera studio. His repertoire encompasses over 90 operas, as well as numerous oratorios, cantatas, and operettas. Skuja has collaborated with esteemed artists such as Laima Andersone-Silāre, Inese Galante, and Ingus Pētersons. Notably, he was a student of Lūcija Garūta, reflecting her influence in his musical journey.

Her work, shaped by these experiences, played a vital role in Latvian chamber music. As poet Zenta Mauriņa described, Garūta’s music has a celestial quality, lifting the listener beyond the earthly towards the stars.
